RIVER TAFF

Again a river that used to flow black with coal dust from the mining industry. This is a much larger river in width than the Rhymney and flows with more power, but also has lovely slack glides to fish the fly and nymphs. This river's Grayling and Brown Trout tend to be much larger than the Rhymney's.
Indicating once again how these rivers have rejuvenated themselves they are now supporting an abundance of flies and water shrimps which are also feeding the many birds such as Kingfishers, Dippers and Wagtails that can be seen along the river banks.
It is important when after Grayling in the winter months to get the fly or nymph down quickly as the river will be carrying excess water from the valley.
Heavy Czech nymphs (tungheads) or Gold heads will get you on the bottom where the fish are.
In the summer I always fish as light as possible with a very fine tippet tied to any of the dry flies mentioned. This should bring a fish to the riverbank.

Tackle: The rod that I use is 10ft and is suited to a 6-7 wt floating line is just fine.
A pair of breathable chest waders are also ideal as well.
Fly leader from 2-6Ib depending on conditions will cover all options.

Flies: Greenwells Glory, March Browns, Sedges and any of the above all will catch you fish, and many other flies that are available on the market .
In the summer I like to fish a team of wet flies such as Teal Blue and Silver, Butchers, Zulus or Invictas cast across and down this lovely river, when the long streamer weed is flowing with its beautiful small flowers sitting on top.
