SPINNING
Usually I spin when the conditions of the river tell me to. I much prefer to catch all my fish on the fly, but when the river is carrying extra water from a few days of rain, then I do not hesitate to spin for Sewin. But even in low water conditions sometimes I may not get a pull to the fly. I can remember on one occasion fishing a well known pool in the bright sunlight of a summers day. I was fishing a size 14 Butcher on the point fly and a Peter Ross on the dropper of the same size. The fish were there but were not having it.
So I decided to try a spot of spinning. On went a very small mepps, and within a few turns of the handle I was into a fresh Sewin of a pound plus and no sooner had I cast out again I was into another one. This one jumped all over the place and eventually was landed and weighing over two pounds! Proves you never know what's going to work on the day.
Rods and reels are a personal choice but for fishing the rivers I have described my choice as an 8'6" Greys Prodigy 2 piece spinning rod, light enough to fish with all day and very sensitive but has reserves of power in the middle to butt section. ...continued |
