RIVER RHYMNEY

A river that used to flow black with the coal dust of the valleys in the past mining era, now clean as it's many years since the pits closed, the Rhymney now supports a healthy stock of Grayling and natural Brown Trout.
Now that the river's water quality has improved, so has the fly hatch through out the spring and summer months as well as the water shrimp life - this has greatly improved with time.
When fishing the river after Grayling I tend to use a leader of about 2- 4Ib, be it fluorocarbon or Maxima monofilament, as this ties droppers perfectly.
I start with a Czech nymph on the bottom and a small water shrimp pattern on the dropper. If this does not entice any bites then I change to gold heads and keep on changing the patterns as necessary until persistence pays off (hopefully).
With the trout on the dry fly my favourite's are the Greyduster, which never fails to raise a trout from the river bed, and the Black Gnat which is a very good fly indeed.

Tackle: A rod that handles a 4-6 wt floating line is ideal and rod length of 8’-9'.
Fly leader from 2-4Ib as mentioned will cover all options.
Thigh waders or a pair of breathable chest waders will cover all options and keep you warm (in the winter)

Flies: Black Gnat, Coch-y-Bonddu, Grey Duster, Czech Nymphs, Gold Heads as well as Wet flies all work very well.
