RIVER OGMORE

A river around the same size as the Rhymney which also holds a natural population of Brown Trout but is also stocked throughout the season by the O.A.A. There are many deep holding pools for the lovely Sewin - my favourite fish but is not always an easy catch.
The Ogmore has some large Sewin, which I myself have lost in the past and it does make you wonder how they come off!
At the start of the season and if the river is carrying some extra water, my fly leader is between 10-12Ib breaking strain.
I use Maxima for my leader as I find it ties knots very well.
Some anglers on the Ogmore fish with a dropper all the time throughout the season, but I tend to fish with just the one fly at night. During the day if I am fishing small flies then I tend to fish the dropper as well.

Tackle: A 10 ft 7 wt rod being able to cast a sunk line if required during the session but a floating line or an intermediate/sinktip should cover all options.
Fly leader from 6-12Ib and even 15Ib if the river is carrying some extra water.
Breathable chest waders are ideal for a nights Sewin fishing as they will keep you warm.

Flies: My favourites are black and silver, be it waddingtons, ally tubes and flying trebles.
Don’t forget snake flies and a favourite of mine, the surface lure.
During daylight fishing I like to fish a bushy sedge fly or hoppers that will sit on top of the water, or a team of wet flies such as Peter Ross and Butchers.
